The Young Chef - NO LONGER AVAILABLE

This is a small 5 x 7 on Raymar panel.  This work is my favorite way to paint...very impressionist with lots of loose juicy strokes of vibrant oil paints.  This young chef was preparing lunch in one of my favorite restaurants in Hendersonville, NC.

Cherry Lemon Sundrop???

If you don't live in my area, you will probably wonder what in the world this is about!  In my hometown of Concord, NC, they have a homegrown softdrink call SUNDROP.  And, if you go to the local What a Burger, you can get it with cherry and lemon.  The month of December, the local art guild has asked for paintings to display in an exhibit that is about our area.  This is my take on local art...the Cherry Lemon Sundrop is art to my son Corey.  It was always his favorite thing!  This one's for you Corey!

Artwork for the Holidays

A wonderful way to share the holidays and your artwork with your friends and family is to make your own holiday cards.  I decided to get an early start and painted this small oil to use for my cards this year.  Hope this gets the season started....

We all painted quite a few paintings last week, and some became "learning experiences"...but, this one is my favorite of those I completed.   I struggle to leave out the unnecessary information to make a good composition.  I like the simplicity of this one and the crop.

Overview of Karin Jurick Workshop

All good things must come to an end....  What a great experience I had last week! I was so fortunate to spend a full week painting with very talented painters from all over the US and Canada.  The video below highlights some of the great work done during the week by my fellow artists, and of course, Karin.

Day Three and Four

If you ever have the opportunity to study with Karin Jurick, take it!  First, we have had a great time with some talented artists.  The one above is from a Raleigh NC area artist.  I found her work to be very interesting.

It would be impossible not to improve your artwork in this class.  Karin is very giving and helps you throughout the day.  I highly recommend this to oil painters.

Day Two of Karin Jurick Workshop

On day two, it was the student artists time to paint.  We were given a photograph exactly like the one Karin painted in the demo of day one.  It was interesting to see how some artists free hand drew the "beach lady" while others were very slowly graphing it.  Then, the painting began with the flat brushes and the many colors.  My version is shown here.  I walked around the art studio and can honestly say, each and every artist did a unique but equally beautiful version.

Then, we watched a short demonstration of a portrait done from....a mugshot!  Karin drew it freehand and painted the mug in no more than thirty minutes.  Very fun to watch!

Then, the student artists were invited to wine and cheese at the Morris and Whitesides Gallery in Hilton Head to meet the owner, get advice on gallery representation, and the opportunity to view the gallery without anyone but the student artists invited.  What an opportunity!!!

Days One of Karin Jurick's Workshop

Day #1 - I was so excited to begin the learning process at this Hilton Head, SC, workshop conducted by Karin Jurick of Atlanta.  I have admired her figurative oil paintings for years.  I first learned of Karin through her painting challenges and have been a faithful blog follower ever since.

We started the day with a presentation of the photographs she takes and then the paintings she does from those photographs.  It was amazing to see what she can do with a photograph that most of us would consider "bad".  She then showed us what she does to improve on the photographs through the magic of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

The first day ended with a wonderful demonstration on a photograph each artist will paint on day two.  We gathered around Karin and watched the magic begin.  She only uses flat brushes and uses a pizza pan with approximately fifty paint colors.  Actually, during this demonstration she only used one brush and washed it in Gamsol after most strokes.
