Coastal Rocks, An Ell composition

As I mentioned in my last post, I am trying to gain knowledge from the famed book on landscape composition by Edgar Payne.  This painting could be considered a Steelyard composition which has a large tall mass on one side, but a smaller on the other; however, I think it fits the Ell (rectangular) compositon more completely.  The Ell basically is shaped like the letter "L" with an extended bottom line.  Hope you enjoy my compositon.  This is a 9 x 12 inch seascape based on the California coast.

DPW Challenge

Carol Marine and her husband David have developed the Daily Paintworks Challenge.  This is a great place to browse and buy original artworks by very established professional artists and up and coming artists alike.  The latest challenge was a photo Carol took from a trip to Germany.  The previous challenge is also still in play and the benefits of that auction are all designated as aid to Japan.  Here is my challenge entry.  Follow this LINK to see the beautiful works.

Landscape Cottage - instructions from Richard Schmid

I wanted to make you all aware of a great learning tool on the internet.  You can purchase DVDS and books by the great painter Richard Schmid, but did you know you could get monthly lessons with photos of each step.  Go to http://www.swatlandstudios.com/home.html and you can subscribe.  It is reasonably priced.  I am not often attracted to landscape, but I did enjoy doing this one and like the loose, fresh look of the strokes.  His limited palette is also very nice.
